Scope & Content |
Letterhead from Hotel Albany of Clancy, noting the proprietor P. Leary. Letter dated August 10, 1900 from J. (Jesse) Wilkinson of Clancy to Charles Scharf, Jefferson County Clerk in Boulder. Contents of letter reports the school board meeting decision to levy a 3 mill tax for this district. This letter is a color copy, 8.5"x11" (original may be available at the Boulder Heritage Center). This file also has a photo of the Albany Hotel, along with an 1897 newspaper about a fight at hotel and an article about the 1902 fire that destroyed the hotel. The Albany Hotel was a grand, two story building, with a bar and dance hall attached, called "Seavy Hall." The sign on the building says 'The Albany,' so this had traditionally been referred to as the "Albany Hotel" rather than the "Hotel Albany." (Museum photo). The hotel was in operation by 1897, and was located on one of Clancy's main streets in the business district. (The exact location is unknown. Bob Marks speculated that it was possibly on the lot where the current post office is located.) The 1900 census indicates that town people were boarding at the hotel at that time. In 1902, a massive fire broke out in the dance hall and destroyed the hotel. (Several other businesses also burned.) The building was only partially insured and the hotel was never rebuilt. |
