Summary (based on newspaper clippings): Elkhorn Mine was a major operation in Jefferson County. In 1884, the Elkhorn Mining Company surveyed the town of Elkhorn, near their mill and the Elkhorn Mine. By 1891, (date of document),the company employed about 175 miners and shipped roughly 55 carloads of "first-class" ore per month. Source: United States Geological Survey Twenty Second Annual Report 1900-1901 Part 2 Ore Deposits. Numerous quartz locations were made in the Elkhorn Mining District before 1870, but the area did not attract attention until the A. M. Holter lode became a producing mine. This property, later known as the Elkhorn mine, was the principal producer of the district—a prominent silver mine of the country. In 1883 the property was sold to A. M. Holter, who organized the Elkhorn Mining Company. The original claim was named the Holter lode and the mine was known as the Elkhorn Mine. In 1888 the Elkhorn mine was sold to a London firm, which took the name and property of the old corporation. The inaccessibility of the district, situated in the heart of the mountains, deterred active prospecting in the early years. The Northern Pacific Company built a railroad branch line up the gorge of Elkhorn Creek. This made it possible to easily and more profitably ship the silver-lead ores discovered in the Elkhorn mine. From 1884 to 1900, the mine was in continuous operation. The mine was closed down in 1900, due to unprofitable conditions. The town of Elkhorn, a settlement with a population of about 600, was built and maintained practically by this one mine, and the supplies shipped to the district for mine and town kept the railroad line busy for many years. |
