G. Winston, of Winston Bros, Minneapolis MN • P. B. Winston, of Winston Bros, Minneapolis MN • J. W. Kendrick, of NPRR, St Paul, MN, Mine Summary (based on newspaper clippings): The East Pacific Mine was active by 1889, owned by the Winston Bros. and Kendrick. It is located six miles south of Placer (MT), one of the Beaver Creek Mines. Placer’s name changed to Winston. By 1895, the East Pacific was considered a "famous" silver claim. In 1907, the mine was still in operation, now in Broadwater County (county lines changed). It was again in operation in 1915, the gold mine managed by R. A. Bell (Clancy/Lump Gulch). The mine was still in operation until at least 1946. Winston Bros Summary (based on newspaper clippings): Beginning in 1881, the Winston Brothers were railroad contractors that constructed the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana. By 1889, the Winstons had expanded their business interests into mining, at the East Pacific Mine. In 1934, the Winston Brothers began a gold dredging operation on Prickly Pear Creek, between Jefferson City and Clancy. The dredge stopped in 1948. (NP Full page article) Other: Miss Ada Glass (Sherry Carlson’s mother?) married Wes Lindsay in 1942. Wes was employed on the Winston Brothers dredge near Clancy. The Winston Brothers mining interests continued in Montana through at least 1947. |
