Folder 5: 1905 LUMP GULCH Letterhead—Liverpool Mining Co. (Original) -7."x 8.25", Letterhead -April 25, 1905 -Bill to School District #1 (Clancy) for coal -Names: E. A. Ely, Superintendent, T. F. Merrill This is an item of significant historical value for North Jefferson County. The Liverpool is one of the richest and most famous silver mines in Jeffco. The discoverer of the Liverpool, T.G. Merrill, was an 1864 N. Jeffco prospector who went on to lead the cause of free coinage (and became very wealthy!) The bill was to the CLANCY SCHOOL. And, the managers (Ely & Merrill) have substantial ties to North Jeffco history. E. A. Ely & T. F. "Frank" Merrill: Edmond Andrew Ely worked the famously rich Liverpool Mine in Lump Gulch with Frank Merrill from about 1895 through 1906. They leased the Liverpool from the Merrill Miller Mining Co. Frank was the son of Clancy Mining Pioneer Thomas G. Merrill (1864 Jeffco miner & discoverer of the Liverpool), while Ely was TG Merrill’s nephew. Edmond moved to Salt Lake City in 1907. Edmond Ely’s brother Mark C. Ely likely followed him to Clancy. Mark married Lena Haynes (Daughter of Mark A Haynes of Red Cliff Ranch) in 1903 and they continued residing in the Clancy area until about 1928. Another brother, Albert W. Ely, also moved to Clancy and married Lida Chestnut (daughter of Clancy merchant TJ Chestnut) in 1910. They resided in Clancy through at least 1920. |
