Notes |
Ernest Marks and his brother Irving migrated to Montana in the late 1800s. The brothers were from a large family on a small tract of land in Maine. They traveled west through Corrine, Utah, then north to the Jefferson Valley, near Whitehall. In the early 1890s, they headed for the Boulder area to prospect for gold on the Little Boulder River. With a lot of hard work (and a little luck), they hit paydirt. Ernest later sold his "Only Chance" mining claim shares for a handsome profit. The brothers moved further north in 1893, settling near Clancy. They were skilled horsemen-teamsters, draft horse trainers, and breeders. Ernest and Irving found this an ideal location to pursue the horse business, since miners and other operations needed draft horses to transport supplies. Plentiful "open lands" also offered good grazing opportunities for their livestock. Ernest Marks (1866-1922) likely met Marietta "Metta" Winslow (1874-1956), through their connection to the Clancy Methodist Episcopal Church. They were married in 1897. Ernest and Metta lived near Lump Gulch, occupied with farming as well as the freighting and draft horse businesses. They also began acquiring land, including the early, 1872 homestead of H. A. Tanner. Ernest and Metta had two children: Merle (1901), and Myrtle (1906). Merle started school in Lump City. Later, he and Myrtle attended the Clancy School (this building). Merle, then 15, went to work on the ranch and freighting business. He hauled ore from the Little Nell Mine (Lump Gulch) to the railroad in Clancy. Then he hauled coal on the return trip for the mine's boilers. A six-horse team pulled the ore wagon and six more were used to make it up the hill to the mine. In the 1910s, Ernest and Metta filed on homesteads and frequently bought "tax deeds" for lands the county foreclosed on for delinquent taxes. Ernest died in 1922, with Merle continuing to run the ranching operation. Merle married Evelyn Rutherford in 1925. They raised two sons Douglas (1927) and Robert (1932). Doug chose the teaching profession, while Bob partnered with his father at the ranch. Six generations of Marks' have lived on their family ranch. --Submitted by Robert Marks |
