  2. 1917 Passenger Train Wreck - Photograph

    In 1917, curious residents of Jefferson County, Montana, along with a detachment of soldiers, investigated the wreck of the Great Northern passenger train No. 238. The smoker car was hanging off the bridge, and the boilerplate was found nearly 100 feet away on the hillside. There were rumors that the wreck had been caused by German sabotage, but an investigation revealed that the actual cause of the accident was excess speed.

  12. Basin Montana School - Photograph

    A group of Basin School children gather with their teacher in front of their school. The Basin grade school was constructed in 1895. The contractor used wood plank siding, created decorative woodwork in the halls and classrooms, and installed small circular windows. A wooden belfry was built for the school bell.

    Basin residents dressed for an evening out. On the left is Ernest "Sam" Wilson, Florence Sockerson is in the middle and Charlie Carlson is on the right, the other girl is unknown. The Sockerson family owned many buildings in Basin during early 20th century moving out of the area in the late 1920's. Charlie's son Bill still owns the Carlson Ranch in Bernice Montana.
