Great Northern Train near Bernice, Montana - Photograph
A black and white photograph of a northbound Great Northern freight train behind an M-2 locomotive, and about to enter a tunner--#8 or #9-- near Bernice, Montana. Among the 44 cars are empty coal hoppers, oil tankers, hoppers loaded with ore, and boxcars carrying copper ingots for the refineries in Great Falls in June 1939. Today, you can drive on the roadbed from Bernice most of the way to Elk Park. Tunnel #9 is open; tunnel #8 is daylighted.
