Brief bios: -Jerry Smith (1881-1936) arrived in Boulder by 1910 and was a saloon oner with his brother, Evan. In 1917, Jerry was still living in Boulder with his wife, Flora, when he registered for the WWI draft. Jerry worked as an engineer at Jefferson H.S. that year. Jerry and his family moved to Basin in 1920 and was engaged in mining. He moved to Wyoming by 1930. -Bill (William E.) Wolter (Wother) (1855-1934) immigrated to America from Germany in 1870 and moved to Boulder by 1886. He remained in Boulder with his wife and family for the next 48 years, until his death. He owned and operated the Boulder Meat Market and Boulder Exchange Saloon for many years. In 1904, he was said to be the first person in Boulder to own an automobile. By 1917, he owned the first taxi service, shuttling passengers to and from the train depot. -Roy E. Leonard (188-1951) was residing in Boulder by 1916. He registered for the WWI draft on June 5, 1917. (Postcard photo taken 2 days later.) At the time, he was employed at Dry Creek Sawmill. Roy served in the military, spending two years in France during WWI. He saw significant active fighting and reported being gassed. He was a member of the 131st Division, with Company B, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. Roy was one of General Pershing's huskies who took part in the big parade in New York and Washington, D.C. Shortly after his return to Montana, Roy married Delia Loiselle of Basin. The couple lived in Basin until about 1927. |
