Description |
Charlotte and Maurice Stubblefield, along with their three daughters—Kay (11), Joan (9), and Gerry (6)—moved from Broadwater County to Jefferson County, Montana, in December 1952. They purchased property on Lump Gulch Road in Clancy, Montana, from Mary and Morris Molitor. However, they did not move into their new house until the spring of 1953 and temporarily lived in a small dwelling on the Merle and Evelyn Marks ranch. The girls started school at the old Clancy Schoolhouse in January 1953. Kay graduated from eighth grade in the spring of 1955 and attended Cathedral High School in Helena. Meanwhile, Joan and Gerry continued their education in Clancy until 1956, when they enrolled at St. Helena Catholic Grade School. They loved their old house, barn, and stone root cellar, which was said to have been built by an Irish immigrant, an ancestor of the Foley family. Lump Gulch Creek ran through their property, which also featured a small apple orchard. Charlotte and Maurice raised cattle and made hay every summer, creating fond memories of those days. They recall adventures to Frohner Basin, Travis Creek, Clancy Creek, and especially to Park Lake before it became Park Lake Campground. They often made the trip on an unmaintained dirt road in an old stock truck, which was an adventure in itself. The family continued ranching on Lump Gulch Road. Unfortunately, in the fall of 1959, their house caught fire and burned to the ground. They rebuilt a new house in the spring of 1960. In November 1961, they purchased the Clancy Bar from Roxie Quenzer and sold it to Helen Talseth of Helena in March 1970. Charlotte and Maurice continued to live on Lump Gulch Road, managing a small herd of cattle.Tragically, in the early summer of 1976, Maurice was thrown from a horse while riding on the property and never recovered from the accident. He passed away in a Helena hospital in June 1976. Charlotte lived on Lump Gulch Road for another twenty years before she passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in July 1996. |
