Samuel Zacharias Dahl (1893-1957), a blacksmith from Sweden, immigrated to Montana in 1912, and bought land near Warm Springs Creek in 1917. The forge and all the hand-hewn tolls on display were used by Sam Dahl and his descendants at the Dahl ranch near Clancy. Samuel Z. Dahl, his Swedish birth name, worked in Helena as a repairman for the NPRR beginning in 1912. Sam married Bertha Benson (1893-1957) in 1918 and they moved to their ranch near Alhambra in 1919. Bertha was also a native of Sweden, arriving in the U.S. in 1913. She lived with her brother Carl, near Canyon Ferry, prior to her marriage. The couple had four children. Descendants of Sam and Bertha Dahl continue to reside on the ranch in 2020. |
